Art and DT

At Abbey Hill Primary School, both Art and Design Technology (DT) are valued as highly creative and expressive subjects that allow pupils to explore a diverse range of skills, ideas, and concepts.

To ensure depth and quality of provision, Art and DT are delivered in alternate half terms, enabling pupils to engage thoroughly with each unit of work.

Art: Our comprehensive Art curriculum, developed by specialists within the Transform Trust, ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum for Art and Design. There is a clear and progressive sequence of learning from Reception through to Year 6, with opportunities for pupils to revisit key artists and concepts introduced in earlier years. Pupils use their sketchbooks both as a reflective space to record theoretical knowledge and as a creative space to experiment with different ideas and techniques. The curriculum ensures that all pupils have access to a rich and diverse range of artists and artistic techniques, providing inspiration and opportunities throughout their Art journey at school.

DT: Abbey Hill follows the Kapow scheme of work for DT, which ensures progression and comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum throughout Reception to Year 6. Where appropriate, teaching staff adapt units to align with the wider topics being studied, ensuring relevance and engagement. The Design Technology curriculum at Abbey Hill aims to provide pupils with practical experiences that mirror real-world processes of design, creation, and evaluation. We follow a learning process of: Analyse, Design, Make, Evaluate. A key focus of the DT curriculum is the development of technical knowledge and practical skills across a range of disciplines, including cooking and nutrition, structures, mechanisms and textiles
