Maths

At Abbey Hill, our mathematics curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the skills and confidence to succeed in everyday life and future learning. Rooted in creativity and ambition, it supports our Abbeyhillians in becoming fluent, independent and resilient problem-solvers. Our approach reflects our school values of Ambition and Resilience, encouraging children to develop a strong sense of mathematical confidence and perseverance.

We follow the Power Maths scheme, a progressive programme based on the National Curriculum. Lessons use an ‘I do, we do, you do’ structure to model, guide and then enable independent learning, supporting pupils in becoming confident, capable mathematicians. From Foundation Stage to Year 6, children develop a deep understanding through concrete, pictorial and abstract representations. Daily number fluency, mental arithmetic and Mini Maths sessions reinforce key skills, build fluency and close gaps. Pupils apply their learning through regular reasoning and problem-solving, supported by high-quality modelling and resources. Their understanding is further enriched through real-life applications, such as Young Enterprise Week, making maths both purposeful and exciting.
